Connect Google Ads

Connect your Google Ads accounts once for every Tapper product on your workspace, and see what connecting sets up in Google Ads.

Connect a Google Ads account once, and every Tapper product on your workspace works from that one connection: Tapper Block, Tapper Lift and Tapper Vantage. What the connection sets up in the account depends on which of them your workspace has.

Before you start

  • You need the Owner or Admin role in the workspace. See Settings for what each role can do.
  • Sign in with a Google login that can open the Google Ads account, directly or through a manager account.
  • For Block's setup, Lift's fixes and Tapper goals, that login needs access that can make changes in the account, such as Admin or Standard access in Google Ads.
  • Your workspace's products decide what connecting sets up in Google Ads. You see them in Settings > General, on the Products tab. To change them, contact your Tapper team.

Connect an account

1
Open Add an account

In the sidebar, open Setup, then Ad accounts, and click Add ad account. If your workspace has more than one protected entity, first pick the one the accounts belong to with the switcher under the workspace name. On the Google Ads page of Ad accounts, Connect Google Ads opens the same page when no account is connected.

2
Sign in with Google

On the Google Ads row, click Continue with Google. A sign-in window opens, or the same tab if your browser blocks pop-ups. Choose your Google login and allow what Tapper asks for: your email address and access to manage your Google Ads accounts. Leave the Google Ads box ticked on Google's screen, or the connection fails. The window closes when the sign-in is done.

3
Pick the accounts

The list shows every Google Ads account your login can reach, with its name and ID. A manager account is listed as the accounts it manages. To find one, type its name or ID in Search accounts by name or ID. Accounts marked Cancelled in Google Ads, Suspended in Google Ads or Closed in Google Ads are grayed out and cannot be connected. Tick the accounts to connect and click Finish.

4
Click Done

Tapper links the accounts, and the page then reads Google Ads connected, or 2 Google Ads accounts connected when you picked two. Click Done.

The line Google Ads connected above the list means the sign-in worked. Nothing is connected until you click Finish. Click it within 30 minutes of signing in, or sign in again.

There is no invitation to accept in Google Ads: Tapper works through the Google login you signed in with, and keeps that access so it can work on the account when you are not signed in to Tapper.

The accounts then show on the Accounts tab of the Google Ads page, with the status Connected and their Account ID. Tapper reads their campaigns, ad groups and ads when you connect and again every 6 hours. Refresh, on the Campaigns tab, reads them at once.

When you set up a new workspace, its Connect an ad account step has the same Google Ads row. With Block, the button under the list reads Continue and leads to Install website monitoring. Without Block, Finish and then Done take you to Lift.

What connecting changes in Google Ads

What connecting writes into the account depends on your workspace's products. On a workspace without Block, such as Lift only, connecting changes nothing in the account.

Tapper Block

On a workspace with Block, Tapper sets up the following in each account when it links it.

  • The tracking template. Tapper reads the account-level tracking template, keeps a copy, and replaces it with its own. You paste nothing.
  • Four conversion actions, created as secondary actions with a value of 0: Tapper - Invalid Traffic Action (Website), Tapper - Invalid Traffic Action (Click Upload), Tapper - Ad Click Limit Exceeded Traffic Action (Website) and Tapper - Ad Click Limit Exceeded Traffic Action (Click Upload).
  • Two user lists: Tapper - Invalid Traffic List and Tapper - Ad Click Limit Exceeded Traffic List.
  • Two audiences built on those lists: Tapper - Invalid Traffic Audience and Tapper - Invalid and Ad Click Limit Exceeded Traffic Audience.
  • The IP addresses you excluded by hand, on the Auto IP blocking tab of Setup > Advanced. Tapper adds them to the account's Search, Display and Shopping campaigns, and to the new ones it finds later.

When the account's conversions are tracked in a manager account, Tapper creates the conversion actions and the user lists in that manager account, with the account's ID at the end of each name, and creates no audiences.

When blocking is on, Tapper uses the lists to keep invalid traffic out of your campaigns. See Audience exclusion. If you set tracking on a campaign, ad group or ad, add Tapper's template there too, from the Tracking template tab of the Google Ads page. See Tracking template. Block also needs the monitoring script on your website. See Install the monitoring script.

Tapper Lift

Lift reads the account's campaigns and daily figures, and checks the account once a day. It changes the account only when someone makes one of its fixes in Tapper, or within an automation band set for the account. Those changes go through this connection. See Tapper Lift on Google Ads.

Tapper Vantage

Vantage sends conversion values to a Google Ads account through a Tapper goal. Each Tapper goal creates a conversion action and a custom goal in the account, and none exists until someone creates one: on the Accounts and campaigns page of Vantage, or on the Tapper goals tab of the Google Ads page in Setup. See Tapper Vantage.

If an account does not connect

  • After Finish, the page lists each account that did not connect, with the reason and what to do. It offers a retry, or Reconnect Google Ads when only a new sign-in can help. Done with the connected accounts keeps the accounts that did connect.
  • This is taking longer than usual means Tapper is still linking the accounts. Click Keep waiting, or carry on: the accounts appear when they are ready.
  • No ad accounts found means your login reaches no Google Ads account. Click Connect a different account and sign in with a login that has access.

Accounts connected elsewhere

An ad account is connected in one Tapper workspace at a time. If you tick an account that is connected in another Tapper workspace, none of the accounts you ticked is connected, and the message tells you to contact Tapper support to move it. Untick that account to connect the others.

An account connected to another protected entity of your own workspace moves to this one when you connect it here.

Reconnect an account

When Google Ads stops letting Tapper use an account, its row on the Accounts tab shows Needs reconnect or Not active, with the reason. Until you reconnect it, Tapper skips the account: Lift does not check it and its campaigns are not read.

  • Click Reconnect on the row and sign in with a Google login that has access to the account.
  • To reconnect several accounts with one sign-in, click Reconnect N selected on the Accounts tab, where N is the number of accounts ticked. Every account in error starts ticked, so untick any account that needs a different Google login.
  • For Not active, reactivate the account in Google Ads first, then reconnect it.

Owners and admins reconnect accounts.

Disconnect an account

Disconnecting is done by Tapper: contact your Tapper team. In the account's menu, Disconnect is turned off for customer logins.

When Tapper disconnects an account that carries Tapper's tracking template, it puts back the account-level template you had before connecting, or clears it if you had none. It can do this only while it still has access to the account. The conversion actions, user lists and audiences, and the exclusions already on your campaigns, stay in the account. Lift's open recommendations for the account close.
