Install the Tapper Shopify app

Install Tapper on your Shopify store from a private link. One install covers storefront tracking, your order data and order history, and read access to your products and inventory. You add one checkout pixel yourself.

The Tapper Shopify app is installed from a private link we send you. It is not listed in the Shopify App Store, and the link works only for the store it was generated for.

Installing it does four things:

  • It sets up Tapper's tracking on your storefront, with no theme editing.
  • It connects your order and refund data, so Tapper can measure what your ad spend actually earned, including money that came back as refunds.
  • It reads your order history, so Tapper Vantage can learn from your past orders instead of waiting months for new ones.
  • It gives Tapper read access to your products and inventory, for the product checks in Tapper Lift.

Installing the app is not the whole setup

There are three things to do, and the install link only covers the first:

#WhatWhere
1Install the app.The private link we send you.
2Turn on the Tapper Monitoring app embed.Online Store > Themes > Customize.
3Add the Tapper custom pixel.Settings > Customer events.

The app embed and the custom pixel are not set up by installing the app, and the app cannot add them for you. Skip the custom pixel and Tapper sees your storefront but not your checkout: no purchases, no order value, no attribution. Shopify does not let an app add a custom pixel for you, and Tapper's checkout code only runs in a custom pixel.

Each takes about a minute, and you only do them once.

This app replaces the theme edit described in Shopify integration: you no longer paste the monitoring script into theme.liquid. The custom pixel step is unchanged. If you've already done the full manual setup, remove the monitoring script from your theme after installing, or tracking runs twice.

Before you start

1
Confirm you're a store owner or staff with app permissions

Shopify only lets accounts with the Applications permission approve an app install. If the link shows a permissions error, ask your store owner to open it instead.

2
Check the link was made for your store

Each install link is generated for one specific .myshopify.com domain. A link made for another store will not work on yours. Ask us for one bound to your domain.

3
Have your Tapper tracking ID to hand

You'll need it in Step 2. In Tapper, open Setup > Website, then Monitoring, and the Install script and consent tab. Your tracking ID is the text in quotes inside window.tapper.init(...) in the Monitoring script.

Open the link we sent you while signed in to your Shopify admin. Shopify shows an installation screen naming the app and listing what it will be allowed to access.

If your install link is on file with us, Tapper shows it too. In Tapper, open Setup > Website, then Monitoring, and the Install script and consent tab. Under Conversion script, select the Shopify tab. It shows an Install on button for your store, which opens the same link. The button is removed once the link has expired.

Only ever install this app from a link sent to you directly by Tapper. We will never ask you to install it from a link forwarded by a third party, and we will never ask for your Shopify password or your admin API credentials.

Shopify asks you to approve read access to four things. Every permission is read only, so the app never changes your products, orders, or settings. On your storefront, Tapper's tracking adds its visitor ID to the shopper's cart as a hidden cart attribute, when the visitor's consent allows it.

AccessWhat Tapper does with it
Orders.Reads order value, currency, and refunds so we can measure real revenue against ad spend.
All orders.Reads your order history beyond the last 60 days, which is all Shopify shares without this permission.
Products.Reads your products and their variants, including prices, for the product checks in Tapper Lift.
Inventory.Reads your stock levels and the unit cost recorded for each product, for the product checks in Tapper Lift.

We do not request access to your customer records, your pixels, or your store settings, and we never request permission to edit anything.

Tapper receives the order fields it needs: order ID and number, totals, tax, discounts and the discount codes used, shipping charged, currency, payment and fulfillment status, payment method names, your order tags, timestamps, the landing and referring pages, the sales channel, the order's cart attributes (Tapper keeps their names, and a value only for its own visitor ID), the products ordered with their quantities and prices, and Shopify's numeric customer ID. Shopify leaves out customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, and billing and shipping addresses, so they are never sent to us.

Click Install. You'll land back in your Shopify admin a few seconds later.

Then confirm the connection

In Tapper, open Setup > Website, then Monitoring, and the Install script and consent tab. Under Conversion script, select the Shopify tab. Its second step, check the connection, shows a button for your store.

  • If it reads Check connection, click it and approve the screen Shopify shows. That approval also lets Tapper read your order history and your catalog.
  • If it already reads Connected, there is nothing to click, and your new orders are connected. Your order history and your catalog need one more step, so contact us and we'll finish connecting them.

Once the store is connected, the button reads Connected, and the line under it shows your store's domain followed by order tracking is active.

If the Shopify tab says no Shopify store is registered for this website, your store is not registered with us. Tell us and we'll set it up. There is nothing for you to enter.

Already installed? Approve the new access

Stores that installed Tapper earlier keep exactly the access they approved at the time. Nothing breaks: Tapper keeps receiving your orders and refunds as before. Two kinds of access were added since, and one approval covers both:

  • All orders: your order history beyond the last 60 days.
  • Products and inventory: your products, prices and stock levels, for the product checks in Tapper Lift.
1
Open Tapper from your Shopify admin

Go to Apps in your Shopify admin and click Tapper. Shopify lists the new permissions and asks you to approve them. Click Update (or Approve).

2
Check the connection in Tapper

In Tapper, open Setup > Website, then Monitoring, and the Install script and consent tab, and select the Shopify tab under Conversion script. If the button for your store reads Check connection, click it. This is what lets Tapper start reading your order history and your catalog with the new access. If it reads Connected, contact us and we'll finish connecting them.

After you approve, Shopify returns you to your apps list. That is expected: the Tapper app has no screens inside Shopify.

Only an account with the Applications permission can approve. If you don't see the request, ask your store owner to open the app.

Step 2: Turn on storefront tracking

The app adds a Tapper block to your theme. You enable it once:

1
Open the theme editor

Go to Online Store > Themes and click Customize on your live theme.

2
Open app embeds

Click the app embeds icon in the left sidebar (the puzzle piece at the bottom).

3
Enable Tapper Monitoring

Toggle Tapper Monitoring on, and paste your tracking ID into the API Key field.

4
Save

Click Save. Tapper now runs on every storefront page.

Step 3: Check storefront tracking works

Open your store in a browser and browse a product page. Then check that visitor activity appears in Tapper.

If you see visitors arriving in Tapper, the storefront half is done.

You are not finished. This confirms storefront tracking only. Until you complete Step 4, Tapper records visits but no purchases: checkout is a separate surface and needs the custom pixel.

Step 4: Add the checkout pixel (required)

This is the step people miss. It is separate from installing the app and separate from the theme embed, and without it Tapper never sees a purchase.

Shopify does not let an app add a custom pixel for you, and Tapper's checkout code only runs in a custom pixel. That is why it is not part of the app you just installed. It has to be pasted here, by you, once.

The snippet is on the same Shopify tab in Tapper, in its third step, add the checkout pixel. The copy there already contains your tracking ID.

1
Open customer events

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Customer events.

2
Add a custom pixel

Click Add custom pixel, name it Tapper, then click Add pixel.

3
Paste the code

Paste the snippet into the Code window. If you copy it from this page, replace YOUR_TRACKING_ID with your tracking ID. Leave Customer privacy at its defaults unless you have a specific reason to change it.

4
Save, then connect

Click Save, then click Connect pixel. Saving alone does not start tracking. Until you connect it, the pixel sits under Disconnected pixels and collects nothing.

var script = document.createElement("script");
script.src = "https://monitor.tapper.ai/bundle.js";
script.async = true;
script.onload = function () {
  window.tapper.init("YOUR_TRACKING_ID", { ecommerce: "shopify-sandbox", analytics: analytics });
};
document.head.appendChild(script);

The analytics object is provided by Shopify's pixel sandbox. Don't rename or modify it. Copy the snippet exactly, changing only the tracking ID.

Step 5: Confirm everything is connected

1
App installed

Settings > Apps and sales channels lists Tapper.

2
Pixel connected

Settings > Customer events shows your Tapper custom pixel as Connected, not under Disconnected pixels.

3
Orders arriving

Place a test order, or wait for a real one. Once Shopify marks it paid, Tapper receives the order with its value and currency.

Tapper counts an order once Shopify marks it paid, not when checkout completes. An unpaid order, such as cash on delivery, counts from the moment it is paid. Store sales figures that Tapper takes from your orders are paid orders only.

What Tapper receives

From your storefront

Page views, product views, add to cart and browsing behavior, so we can tell real shoppers from bots and other invalid traffic.

From your checkout

Checkout steps and purchases, via the pixel you added in Step 4.

From your orders

The order fields listed in Step 1. Refunds and cancellations too, which is what lets Tapper correct a sale that was later returned rather than counting it forever.

From your order history, once you approve it

The same order details for your past orders, up to 24 months back, except order tags, cart attributes and referring pages, which Tapper does not read for past orders.

From your catalog, once you approve it

Read access to your products and variants (including prices), your stock levels and the unit cost recorded for each product. Tapper Lift's product checks use it.

What Tapper never receives

Customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, billing and shipping addresses. These are excluded before Shopify sends anything.

Removing Tapper

Two things to undo, because they're installed separately:

  1. The app: go to Settings > Apps and sales channels, find Tapper, and click Uninstall. This stops order data immediately and revokes our access, including product and inventory access. It also removes the storefront tracking, since the theme block belongs to the app.
  2. The checkout pixel: go to Settings > Customer events, open your Tapper pixel and disconnect or delete it. Uninstalling the app does not remove this, because you created it yourself.

Uninstalling the app stops storefront tracking as well as order data. 48 hours after you uninstall, Shopify asks Tapper to erase your store's data, and Tapper deletes the orders, refunds and product data it holds for your store. If you only want to disconnect order data, contact us instead of uninstalling.

Troubleshooting

Your link is tied to one store domain and expires after about a week. Check you're signed in to the Shopify account for that store, and that the domain in the link matches it. If the link is older than a few days, ask us for a fresh one. That is the most common cause.

That usually means the link has expired, or the app is set up wrong on our side. Ask us for a fresh link. If a fresh link does the same, tell us: it's something we need to fix, not something you can fix from your side.

Your staff account lacks the Applications permission. Either ask your store owner to open the link, or ask them to grant you that permission in Settings > Users and permissions.

That is the order history, product and inventory access added to the app. Approve it, then check the connection in Tapper as described in Already installed? Approve the new access. Until you approve, Tapper keeps receiving your orders and refunds as before.

Ignore it: it isn't your pixel. Shopify lists installed apps in that section whether or not they run a pixel, and ours doesn't. The one that matters is the custom pixel you added in Step 4, which should read Connected.

The custom pixel from Step 4 is missing, or it was saved but never connected. Open Settings > Customer events and confirm your Tapper pixel is under connected pixels rather than Disconnected pixels.

New orders arrive from the moment of install. Your past orders arrive once you have approved All orders access and clicked Check connection. If the button already reads Connected and your past orders are missing, or no orders appear at all after a new one is paid, contact us.

You most likely still have the old monitoring script in your theme as well as the app's embed. Open Online Store > Themes > Edit code, open layout/theme.liquid, and remove the pasted monitoring script. The app embed replaces it.

Each store needs its own install link, generated for its own domain, and its own custom pixel. Send us the list of store domains and we'll issue one link per store. In Tapper, the Shopify tab then shows a button for each store, with the store's domain under it.
