Connect Meta Ads
Connect your Meta ad accounts to Tapper once, for Tapper Block and Tapper Lift: the Facebook sign-in, the permissions it asks for, and what connecting changes in your Meta account.
You connect each Meta ad account to Tapper once. The connection serves every product on your workspace that works on Meta: Tapper Block and Tapper Lift.
Before you start
- You need the Owner or Admin role in the workspace. Managers and Viewers cannot connect ad accounts. See Settings for what each role can do.
- Sign in with a Facebook profile that has access to each ad account you want to connect.
- On a workspace with Block, each ad account also needs a Meta pixel, Meta's Custom Audience terms accepted for that account, and Advertiser or Admin access for your Facebook profile. View-only (Analyst) access is not enough. Block creates an audience in the account, and that needs all three.
Connect an account
Open the Meta Ads tab
In the sidebar, open Setup, then Ad accounts, then the Meta Ads tab. If your workspace has more than one protected entity, first pick the one the account belongs to with the switcher under the workspace name.
Open the Add an account page
Click Add ad account, or Connect Meta Ads if the tab lists no account. The Add an account page opens.
Sign in with Facebook
On the Meta Ads row, click Continue with Facebook. A sign-in window opens, or the same tab if your browser blocks pop-ups. Sign in and follow Meta's screens. Share every ad account you want to connect, and allow Tapper to manage your ads.
Choose the accounts
Back in Tapper, the page lists the active ad accounts your Facebook sign-in shares with Tapper. You can search them by name or ID. Tick the ones to connect. On a workspace with Block, click Accept the terms on Meta under each ticked account and accept Meta's Custom Audience terms in the tab that opens. Without Block, you can skip it. Then click Finish.
Wait while Tapper links them
When the page says the accounts are connected, click Done. The Meta Ads tab lists each account with the status Connected.
When you set up a new workspace, use its Connect an ad account step: it has the same Meta Ads row, and the sidebar shows no Setup section until that setup is finished. With Block, the button under the account list is Continue, and the setup goes on to install website monitoring.
On a workspace with Tapper Lift, you can also start in Lift: in the sidebar, open Business details under Lift, pick Meta, and on the Accounts tab click Connect Meta. Once an account is connected, the link reads Connect another account. Both open the same Add an account page.
What connecting changes in Meta
Once an account is connected, Tapper reads its campaigns, ad sets and ads. What it creates in the account depends on your products.
With Tapper Block
Block creates its invalid traffic audience, Tapper - Invalid Traffic Audience, in each account you connect. If the account already has Tapper's audience, Block reuses it. Connecting adds it to no ad set: you choose the ad sets that exclude it. See Audience exclusion.
Without Tapper Block
Connecting creates nothing in your Meta ad account and needs no Meta pixel.
Tapper Lift
On a workspace with Lift, Lift uses the same connection, with no second sign-in. Once Tapper has set your workspace up, Lift checks the account every day, and its recommendations appear in Lift. Connecting changes nothing in the account for Lift. See Tapper Lift on Meta Ads.
The permissions Tapper asks for
Tapper's Meta sign-in asks for these permissions: email, pages_show_list, ads_read, ads_management, business_management and pages_read_engagement. Tapper uses this access to list your ad accounts and read them. With Block, it also creates its audience in each account and adds it to, or removes it from, the ad sets you choose. With Lift, on an account where your Tapper team turns on fixes, it also makes the change in Meta when you confirm a Fix on a recommendation. See Tapper Lift on Meta Ads.
Accounts in other workspaces, and disconnecting
- An ad account that is connected in another Tapper workspace cannot be connected here. If you tick one, Tapper connects none of the accounts you ticked and asks you to contact Tapper support to move it. To connect the others, untick it and click Finish again.
- An account that is connected to another protected entity of your workspace moves to this one when you connect it here.
- Only Tapper can disconnect an ad account. Contact your Tapper team.
Reconnect an account
When Meta stops letting Tapper use an account, the Meta Ads tab marks it Needs reconnect or Needs attention and says what happened. For Needs attention, first check the account in Meta Business settings. Then click Reconnect on the account and sign in with Facebook again. Every account that needs reconnecting is ticked for you, and the button above the list, such as Reconnect 2 selected, reconnects every ticked account in one sign-in.
Until an account is reconnected, Tapper stops reading it. Reconnecting needs the Owner or Admin role, like connecting.
If an account does not connect
When some accounts connect and others do not, the page names each account that failed and why, and offers Retry the failed accounts or Reconnect Meta. Done with the connected accounts keeps the ones that worked.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The sign-in window says Connection failed or Sign-in cancelled. | Click Close window, then click Continue with Facebook again. If the sign-in opened in the same tab, click Try again. |
| Tapper couldn't finish connecting this account. Try again; if it fails twice, contact support. | On a workspace with Block, check that the account has a Meta pixel and that its Custom Audience terms are accepted. Then try again. |
| The Facebook profile you connected Tapper with can only view the ad account (Analyst access), or has no advertising access to it. | Ask an admin of the ad account to give your profile Manage campaigns or Manage ad account access in Meta Business settings, under Accounts, Ad accounts, People. Or reconnect Meta with a profile that already has it. |
| Tapper was not given permission to manage your ads when Meta was connected. | Reconnect Meta and allow ads management when Meta asks. If Meta does not ask, first remove Tapper in your Facebook settings under Business integrations, then reconnect Meta. |
| Meta's terms for website Custom Audiences have not been accepted for the ad account. | In Meta Ads Manager, open Audiences for the ad account, choose Create audience, then Custom audience, then Website, and accept the terms Meta shows. Then connect the account again. |
