Web Click Tracking Links
When a Tapper tracking link is the right tool, when it is not, and what it needs to work.
A tracking link is a Tapper URL you place as the click destination of an ad. The click reaches Tapper first, is recorded, and is then redirected to your landing page. It exists for one situation only: an ad source that cannot add its own click id to your landing page.
Do not use tracking links with Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Snapchat or LinkedIn. Those platforms already add a click id to your landing page (gclid, fbclid, ttclid, ScCid, li_fat_id) and the monitoring script reads it. Using a Tapper link as the ad's final URL breaks their destination policies (a redirect that leaves the advertised domain) and sends the click down a path that Tapper does not analyse - protection for that campaign silently stops. Use the platform's own mechanism instead: the Google Ads tracking template, Meta URL parameters, or the TikTok / Snapchat / LinkedIn connection.
When a tracking link is the right tool
- Affiliate networks, native and content-discovery networks, email and SMS campaigns, QR codes, and DSPs that give you a click URL to fill in (Bidease is available as a preset).
- Any source where you control the link the user clicks but the source does not append a click id to your landing page.
What the link needs
Register your website first
Open the protected website in the dashboard and add your domain under Website monitoring → Protected domains. A tracking link's destination must be the exact protected host, a subdomain of it, or - if you registered www.yourdomain.com - the bare yourdomain.com. Anywhere else is refused when you save it.
Build the link
In the Web click tracking tab choose the network type - Other network (the default) or Bidease - fill in the parameters the network expands for you (campaign id, creative id, click id and so on), and set the redirection URL to the exact https:// landing page. http:// destinations are not accepted, and the URL cannot be longer than 2048 characters.
Save it and copy the saved URL
Save the link with a name, then copy it from the Saved tracking links table. Saving is what makes the link work: Tapper stamps the saved link's id (tl) onto the URL, and every click is checked against it. A URL you build yourself without that id - or paste the destination from a saved link into a new one - is refused.
The destination is fixed at save time. A saved link only ever redirects to the host it was saved with - editing the URL you were given to point somewhere else does not re-point it, because the redirect is looked up from the saved link, not read off the URL. To send clicks somewhere else, save a new link.
Revoking a link
Deleting a saved link in the dashboard revokes it immediately: the next click on it finds no matching id and is sent to your protected site's home page instead of your landing page. There is no other way to disable a tracking link - pausing the campaign at the network does not stop clicks that still land on the URL.
What Tapper records
Only the parameters the builder shows (campaign_id, ad_segment_id, ad_id, creative_id, publisher_id, sub_publisher_id, network, keyword, match_type, clid). Anything else on the URL is ignored - it is neither stored nor passed on to your landing page. Each captured value is capped at 320 characters, and a click id that is still an unexpanded macro (for example {{clickid}} because the network did not fill it in) is dropped rather than recorded.
Existing links for a platform that is no longer supported. Links you saved earlier for Google, Meta, TikTok, Snapchat or LinkedIn stay listed and can still be copied or deleted, with a "Legacy" marker. Move those campaigns to the platform's own mechanism linked above.
