Install the Tapper Shopify App
Install Tapper on your Shopify store from a private link - storefront tracking and order data in one install, plus one checkout pixel you add yourself.
The Tapper Shopify app is installed from a private link we send you. It is not listed in the Shopify App Store, and the link works only for the store it was generated for.
Installing it does two things: it sets up Tapper's tracking on your storefront with no theme editing, and it connects your order and refund data so Tapper can measure what your ad spend actually earned - including money that came back as refunds.
Installing the app is not the whole setup
There are three things to do, and the install link only covers the first:
| # | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Install the app. | The private link we send you. |
| 2 | Turn on the Tapper Monitoring app embed. | Online Store → Themes → Customize. |
| 3 | Add the Tapper custom pixel. | Settings → Customer events. |
Steps 2 and 3 are not done by installing the app, and the app cannot do them for you. Skip step 3 and Tapper sees your storefront but not your checkout - no purchases, no order value, no attribution. Shopify's checkout runs in a sandbox that no app is permitted to place a script into on your behalf.
Each takes about a minute, and you only do them once.
This app replaces the theme edit described in Shopify Integration - you no longer paste the monitoring script into theme.liquid. The custom pixel step is unchanged. If you've already done the full manual setup, remove the monitoring script from your theme after installing, or tracking runs twice.
Before You Start
Confirm you're a store owner or staff with app permissions
Shopify only lets accounts with the Applications permission approve an app install. If the link shows a permissions error, ask your store owner to open it instead.
Check the link was made for your store
Each install link is generated against one specific .myshopify.com domain. A link made for another store will not work on yours - ask us for one bound to your domain.
Have your Tapper tracking ID to hand
You'll need it in Step 4. Find it in your Tapper dashboard under the protected website, on the Website monitoring tab.
Step 1: Open the Install Link
Open the link we sent you while signed in to your Shopify admin. Shopify shows an installation screen naming the app and listing what it will be allowed to access.
Only ever install this app from a link sent to you directly by Tapper. We will never ask you to install it from a link forwarded by a third party, and we will never ask for your Shopify password or your admin API credentials.
Shopify asks for one permission:
| Shopify asks for | What Tapper does with it |
|---|---|
| View orders. | Reads order value, currency, and refunds so we can measure real revenue against ad spend. |
We do not request access to your customer records, your products, your pixels, or your store settings.
Tapper only receives the order fields it needs - order ID, order number, totals, currency, payment status, and timestamps. Customer names, email addresses, phone numbers and shipping addresses are excluded at Shopify's end, so they are never sent to us at all.
Click Install. You'll land back in your Shopify admin a few seconds later.
Then confirm the connection
In your Tapper dashboard, open the protected website, go to the Website monitoring tab, select the Shopify tab and click Check connection.
This finishes connecting your order data. Installing the app on its own is not always enough - this step is what lets Tapper read your order history, so do it once after installing.
If Check connection is greyed out, your store is not registered with us yet. Tell us and we'll set it up - there is nothing for you to enter.
Step 2: Turn On Storefront Tracking
The app adds a Tapper block to your theme. You enable it once:
Open the theme editor
Go to Online Store → Themes and click Customize on your live theme.
Open App embeds
Click the app-embeds icon in the left sidebar (the puzzle piece at the bottom).
Enable Tapper Monitoring
Toggle Tapper Monitoring on, and paste your tracking ID into the API Key field.
Save
Click Save. Tapper now runs on every storefront page.
Step 3: Check Storefront Tracking Works
Open your store in a browser and browse a product page. Within a few minutes, visitor activity appears in your Tapper dashboard under the matching protected website.
If you see visitors arriving in Tapper, the storefront half is done.
You are not finished. This confirms storefront tracking only. Until you complete Step 4, Tapper records visits but no purchases - checkout is a separate surface and needs the custom pixel.
Step 4: Add the Checkout Pixel - required
This is the step people miss. It is separate from installing the app and separate from the theme embed, and without it Tapper never sees a purchase.
Shopify's checkout runs in a sandbox that no app is permitted to write to, which is why it cannot be bundled into the app you just installed. It has to be pasted here, by you, once.
Open Customer events
In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Customer events.
Add a custom pixel
Click Add custom pixel, name it Tapper, then click Add pixel.
Paste the code
Paste the snippet below into the Code window, replacing YOUR_TRACKING_ID with your tracking ID. Leave Customer privacy at its defaults unless you have a specific reason to change it.
Save, then Connect
Click Save, then click Connect pixel. Saving alone does not start tracking - until you connect it, the pixel sits under Disconnected pixels and collects nothing.
var script = document.createElement("script");
script.src = "https://monitor.tapper.ai/bundle.js";
script.async = true;
script.onload = function () {
window.tapper.init("YOUR_TRACKING_ID", { ecommerce: "shopify-sandbox", analytics: analytics });
};
document.head.appendChild(script);The analytics object is provided by Shopify's pixel sandbox - don't rename or modify it. Copy the snippet exactly, changing only the tracking ID.
Step 5: Confirm Everything Is Connected
App installed
Settings → Apps and sales channels lists Tapper.
Pixel connected
Settings → Customer events shows your Tapper custom pixel as Connected, not under Disconnected pixels.
Orders arriving
Place a test order, or wait for a real one. Once payment settles, the order appears in Tapper with its value and currency.
Order data arrives when payment settles, not when checkout completes. For most payment providers this is immediate; for a few it takes longer. This is deliberate - it means the revenue figures in Tapper reflect money that actually cleared.
What Tapper Receives
From your storefront - page views, product views, add-to-cart and browsing behaviour, so we can tell real shoppers from bots and other invalid traffic.
From your checkout - checkout steps and purchases, via the pixel you added in Step 4.
From your orders - order ID and number, totals, currency, payment status, and the timestamps Shopify records. Refunds and cancellations too, which is what lets Tapper correct a sale that was later returned rather than counting it forever.
What Tapper never receives - customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, billing and shipping addresses. These are excluded before Shopify sends anything.
Removing Tapper
Two things to undo, because they're installed separately:
- The app - Settings → Apps and sales channels, find Tapper, click Uninstall. This stops order data immediately and revokes our access; it also removes the storefront tracking, since the theme block belongs to the app.
- The checkout pixel - Settings → Customer events, open your
Tapperpixel and disconnect or delete it. Uninstalling the app does not remove this, because you created it yourself.
Uninstalling the app stops storefront tracking as well as order data - your protected website stops receiving data. If you only want to disconnect order data, contact us instead of uninstalling.
Troubleshooting
Your link is tied to one store domain and expires after about a week. Check you're signed in to the Shopify account for that store, and that the domain in the link matches it. If the link is older than a few days, ask us for a fresh one - that is the most common cause.
That usually means the link was opened while signed in to a different Shopify store, so there was nothing to install on the store the link was made for. Sign in to the correct store and open the link again. If it keeps happening, tell us — it's something we need to look at, not something you can fix from your side.
Your staff account lacks the Applications permission. Either ask your store owner to open the link, or ask them to grant you that permission in Settings → Users and permissions.
Ignore it - it isn't your pixel. Shopify lists installed apps in that section whether or not they run a pixel, and ours doesn't. The one that matters is the custom pixel you added in Step 4, which should read Connected.
The custom pixel from Step 4 is missing, or it was saved but never connected. Open Settings → Customer events and confirm your Tapper pixel is under connected pixels rather than Disconnected pixels.
Order data starts flowing from the moment of install and is not backfilled, so orders placed before you installed won't appear. If no orders appear at all after a new one has settled, contact us.
You most likely still have the old monitoring script in your theme as well as the app's embed. Open Online Store → Themes → Edit code, open layout/theme.liquid, and remove the pasted Tapper script - the app's App embed replaces it.
Each store needs its own install link, generated against its own domain, and its own custom pixel. Send us the list of store domains and we'll issue one link per store. If your stores are on Shopify Plus under a single organization, one link can cover them.
