Connect Klaviyo to Tapper
Connect your Klaviyo account so Tapper reads your store's orders, refunds and cancellations, and Vantage learns what each order was worth.
Klaviyo holds the orders your store sends it. Connecting it lets Tapper read those orders, with their refunds and cancellations, so Vantage learns what each order was worth and who comes back to buy again. To learn more about Vantage, see Tapper Vantage.
Tapper only reads. It asks for four view-only permissions and changes nothing in Klaviyo.
Before you start
- In Tapper, you need to be a workspace owner or admin, with two-step sign-in, to connect, test, change or disconnect Klaviyo. Managers can see the connection and cannot change it.
- Your store should already send its orders to Klaviyo. Tapper looks for the placed orders in your account, and for refunds and cancellations where your store sends them.
- Your order success page should send the order number, the value and the currency to the Tapper purchase tag. See Install the conversion script.
Two ways to connect
Both give Tapper the same four read permissions: Accounts, Events, Metrics and Profiles. Use a private key if you prefer to create the access yourself.
| Way | What you do |
|---|---|
| Continue with Klaviyo | Sign in to the Klaviyo account that holds your store's orders and approve Tapper on Klaviyo's own page. |
| Connect with a private key | Create a private key in Klaviyo and paste it into Tapper. |
Connect with Klaviyo
In Tapper, open Setup > Data sources in the sidebar. Klaviyo is in the Leads and customers group. If your workspace has more than one protected entity, first pick the one your store belongs to in the switcher under the workspace name.
The row reads Not connected. Click Continue with Klaviyo. Klaviyo's sign-in page opens in the same tab.
Sign in to the Klaviyo account that holds your orders, review the four read permissions and approve them.
Tapper opens Setup > Data sources again, checks the account at once and reads Klaviyo connected.
If you decline the approval, or the sign-in takes too long, Tapper says so. Click Continue with Klaviyo again.
Connect with a private key
In Klaviyo, open Settings > API keys and create a private key with read access to Accounts, Events, Metrics and Profiles. Give it no write access.
In Tapper, open Setup > Data sources and click Connect with a private key on the Klaviyo row.
Paste the whole key into the Private key field and click Connect. Tapper stores it encrypted and never shows it again, only its first and last characters.
Tapper checks the account at once. A passing check reads Klaviyo connected. A failed check says why in plain words.
Test the connection
Click Test connection at the top of the Klaviyo page. Tapper reads the account, your order, refund and cancellation data, the events and one customer. The result shows each read as read or not read.
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Klaviyo did not accept the key. | Check that you copied the whole private key, or create a new read-only key in Klaviyo under Settings > API keys. |
| Klaviyo did not give Tapper all the read access it needs. | Connect again and approve every item Klaviyo asks for. With a private key, give it read access to Accounts, Events, Metrics and Profiles. |
| This Klaviyo account has no order data yet. | Connect your store to Klaviyo first, then test again. |
| Klaviyo asked Tapper to slow down. | Try again in a minute. |
The Activity tab keeps the last test and the reason it failed.
Switch on orders
A new connection starts with orders switched off. Open the Klaviyo page, find Orders from Klaviyo on the Overview tab, and click Switch on orders. The button works after a passing test that found your placed orders.
Tapper then reads the account's earlier orders, then new ones as they arrive. Last order read shows when the latest read finished. If a read fails, Why the last read failed says why. Switch off orders stops the reading. The orders Tapper already read stay, and the connection stays too.
If your store is connected to Tapper directly, for example through the Tapper Shopify app, leave Klaviyo's orders off, so no order is counted twice.
What the Overview shows
| Row | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Connected with | Signed in with Klaviyo, or a private key with its preview. |
| Last checked | When Tapper last tested the connection. |
| Store platform | The store that sends its orders to your Klaviyo account. |
| Orders from Klaviyo | Whether Tapper reads this account's orders. |
| Last order read | When Tapper last finished reading orders. |
| Orders, Refunds, Cancellations | Whether Tapper found each in your account, or that your store does not send it to Klaviyo. |
Shopify sends Klaviyo full refunds only, so a partial refund on a Shopify order does not reach Tapper. The value follows full refunds.
Send the order number from the purchase tag
Klaviyo does not record which ad click brought the shopper. The Tapper purchase tag does. Tapper joins the two by order number, so the tag on your order success page must send the same order ID Klaviyo records for the order.
With the Tapper Conversion Script template in Google Tag Manager, map these fields.
| Template field | Data layer path |
|---|---|
| Order Value | ecommerce.value |
| Currency | ecommerce.currency |
| Transaction ID | ecommerce.transaction_id |
If you call the tag in code, pass the value as a number and the order number as text.
window.tapper.push(1099.00, 'AED', '000012345');An order that cannot be tied to a click still counts as an order. It cannot be sent to your ad account as a conversion.
What Tapper reads
| Data | What |
|---|---|
| Account | The account ID, the currency and the time zone. |
| Orders | The order ID, the date, the currency and the order value. |
| Refunds and cancellations | The refunded and cancelled orders. |
| Customers | Klaviyo's customer ID and the email address. |
The email is hashed the moment it arrives. The original address is never stored.
Tapper counts an order's value without tax and shipping, net of refunds. When your store's order event in Klaviyo does not split tax and shipping, Tapper does not guess the value.
Tapper never reads the customer's name, address or phone number, or the items in the order. It sends nothing to Klaviyo.
If the connection stops
If Klaviyo removes Tapper's access, or the access goes unused for 90 days, the row reads Needs reconnecting and a Reconnect button appears. Click Reconnect and sign in again. After any other failure, disconnect Klaviyo and connect it again.
Disconnecting
Click Disconnect on the Klaviyo page and confirm. Tapper deletes the stored access, switches orders off and stops reading. The orders it already read stay.
If you connected with sign in, Tapper also ends its access at Klaviyo. If you connected with a private key, delete the key in Klaviyo under Settings > API keys to end the access on Klaviyo's side too.
