Web click tracking links
When a Tapper tracking link is the right tool, when it is not, and what it needs to work.
A tracking link is a Tapper URL you place as the click destination of an ad. The click reaches Tapper first, is recorded, and is then sent on to your landing page. Use one only for an ad source that cannot add its own click ID to your landing page.
Do not use tracking links with Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Snapchat or LinkedIn. A tracking link as their final URL breaks their destination policies, and Tapper does not analyze those clicks. For Google Ads, Meta and TikTok, the monitoring script reads the click ID the platform adds to your landing page (gclid, fbclid, ttclid). Use the Google Ads tracking template, Meta URL parameters or TikTok URL parameters instead. The monitoring script does not read Snapchat's or LinkedIn's click ID.
When a tracking link is the right tool
- Native networks, email campaigns, QR codes and DSPs that give you a click URL to fill in. Bidease has its own preset.
- Any source where you control the link people click but the source does not add a click ID to your landing page.
Build a tracking link
Add your website first
In the Tapper app, open Setup > Website, then Domains. Under Protected domains, click Add domain, enter your domain and click Add. A tracking link can only send clicks to a protected domain or a subdomain of it. If you added www.example.com, links to example.com work too. Setup > Website appears once a Google Ads, Meta, TikTok or Microsoft Ads account is connected to the protected entity.
Build the link
Open Click tracking. Under Tracking link builder, pick the Network type: Other network, the default, or Bidease (DSP), which fills in its own macros. Click a field under Supported fields, or Add parameter, and enter the value or macro your network fills in for each click. In Destination URL, enter the https:// address of your landing page. An http:// address is refused, and the URL can be at most 2048 characters.
Save it and copy the saved link
Click Save link, enter a Tracking link name and click Save. Copy the link from the Saved tracking links table and paste it into your network as the click URL. The preview under the builder does not work until you save it: saving gives the link its own ID (tl), and Tapper refuses a click without a saved link's ID.
The website is fixed when you save. A saved link only sends clicks to the website it was saved with. To send clicks to another website, edit the link and use its new URL in your network, or save a new link.
Turn off a link
Delete the link from Saved tracking links and click Confirm. From the next click on, the link is refused and no longer reaches your landing page. Deleting a link does not affect your other links.
What Tapper reads from a link
Tapper reads only the supported fields the builder lists: campaign_id, ad_segment_id, ad_id, creative_id, publisher_id, sub_publisher_id, network, keyword, match_type and clid. Each captured value is capped at 320 characters, and a click ID that is still an unexpanded macro (for example {{clickid}} because the network did not fill it in) is dropped rather than recorded.
Links saved earlier for Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Snapchat or LinkedIn stay listed with a Legacy marker that says the platform is no longer supported. You can copy or delete them, but not edit them. Move those campaigns to the platform's own method linked above.
