Connect CleverTap to Tapper
Connect your CleverTap account so Tapper reads your app's purchases and in-app events and ties them to the install and ad click behind each customer.
CleverTap holds the purchases and in-app events your mobile app sends it. Connecting it lets Tapper read those events and tie the money your app earns to the install and ad click behind each customer.
Tapper only reads. It never writes to CleverTap and changes nothing in your account.
Before you start
- In Tapper, you need to be a workspace owner or admin, with two-step sign-in, to connect, test, change or disconnect CleverTap. Managers can see the connection and cannot change it.
- In CleverTap, you need an admin who can make a passcode and who can see your Account ID.
- Your app should already send its purchases to CleverTap as an event, for example Charged.
- To tie events to installs, your app's installs must come to Tapper through AppsFlyer or Adjust. See Tie events to installs.
What you give Tapper
| Field | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Account ID | In CleverTap, Settings > Project. Three to 64 letters, digits or dashes. |
| Region | The region your CleverTap dashboard runs in. |
| Time zone | The time zone of your CleverTap account. Its days start and end there. |
| Passcode | In CleverTap, Settings > Passcode. An admin makes it. |
Tapper stores the passcode encrypted and never shows it again, only its first and last characters.
Regions
Choose one of the six regions CleverTap runs in.
| Region | Shown in Tapper |
|---|---|
| EU | Europe |
| IN1 | India |
| SG1 | Singapore |
| US1 | United States |
| APS3 | Indonesia |
| MEC1 | United Arab Emirates |
Connect CleverTap
In CleverTap, open Settings > Passcode and make a passcode. Open Settings > Project and copy your Account ID.
In Tapper, open Setup > Data sources in the sidebar. If your workspace has more than one protected entity, first pick the one your app belongs to in the switcher under the workspace name. Click Add source, open the Analytics group and choose CleverTap. Its page opens on the Connection tab.
Click Set up. Enter the Account ID, choose the region and the time zone, paste the passcode and click Connect.
Tapper saves the connection and asks you to pick the events to read. See Pick the events.
An app has one CleverTap connection. To connect a different CleverTap account to the same app, disconnect the first one.
Pick the events
Open the Events tab and click Add an event. Type the event name exactly as it is named in CleverTap, then say what it is.
| Kind | What it is | What Tapper reads |
|---|---|---|
| Money | A purchase or payout with an amount. | The amount, the currency, the order id and the time. |
| Activity | A visit, launch or tap. | A count per customer per day. No amount. |
For a money event, Tapper reads the amount from the property you name. Leave it empty for Amount. The order id property keeps one order from counting twice. Leave it empty for Charged ID. Name the property that holds the currency of each purchase, or, if every purchase is in one currency, choose that currency from the list.
Tapper suggests Charged as a money event, and App Launched, App Uninstalled, Notification Viewed and Notification Clicked as activity events. You can pick any other event your account holds, up to 50 in all.
Tapper tests each event before it saves it, so an event name CleverTap does not know is refused. Event names are case sensitive.
Test the connection
Click Test connection at the top of the CleverTap page and enter an event name. Tapper reads yesterday for that event, in your account's time zone, and tells you in plain words whether it worked. It stores no event rows from the test. A day with no rows is fine if nothing happened that day.
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| CleverTap did not accept the Account ID and passcode. | Check them and the region, or make a new passcode in CleverTap under Settings > Passcode, then connect again. A wrong region reads the same way. |
| CleverTap has no event with this name in your account. | Check the spelling. Event names are case sensitive. |
| CleverTap asked Tapper to slow down. | Try again in a minute. |
| CleverTap is still preparing the answer. | Try again in a minute. |
| CleverTap did not answer just now. | Try again in a few minutes. |
The Activity tab keeps the last test and the reason it failed.
Switch on reading
A new connection starts with reading switched off. On the Overview tab, find Reading from CleverTap and click Switch on reading. The button works once a test has passed, you have picked at least one event and the connection is not stopped.
Tapper reads your events one day at a time, after each day is over in your account's time zone, starting with your earlier history. It reads the most recent days again, so events a phone sends late are not missed. An order is never counted twice.
Switch off reading stops it. What Tapper already read stays, and the connection stays too, so you can switch reading on again.
Tie events to installs
Tapper ties each customer's events to an install of your app, only when the match is exact. A customer who matches no install, or more than one, stays untied. Tapper never guesses.
| Your install tool | What to set |
|---|---|
| AppsFlyer | Pass the CleverTap id as the Customer User ID. |
| Adjust | Pass the CleverTap id as the partner parameter clevertapId, and use the Tapper callback template that includes {partner_parameters}. If your app was already set up on Adjust, paste Tapper's Adjust template into Adjust again. |
If your install tool carries your own customer id instead, Tapper also matches it to the identity, email address or phone number CleverTap holds for the customer. Tapper compares them as hashes. For the Adjust setup, see Adjust integration.
What the Overview shows
| Row | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Account | The CleverTap account Tapper reads, and its region. |
| Time zone | The time zone the account's days start and end in. |
| Passcode | Its first and last characters. |
| Last checked | When Tapper last tested the connection. |
| Reading from CleverTap | Whether Tapper reads the events you picked. |
Refunds are not taken off CleverTap values. CleverTap has no refund event, so a refunded purchase keeps its full value.
What Tapper reads
| Data | What |
|---|---|
| Customer | CleverTap's customer id, and the identity, email address and phone number as hashes. |
| Money events | The time, the amount, the currency and the order id. |
| Activity events | A count per customer per day. |
Tapper hashes the email address and the phone number the moment they arrive. It never stores the customer's name, the original email address, phone number or identity, the rest of the customer's profile or any event property you did not map.
If the connection stops
If CleverTap no longer accepts the passcode because it expired or was deleted, the connection reads Needs reconnecting. Make a new passcode in CleverTap under Settings > Passcode, then disconnect CleverTap in Tapper and connect it again.
Disconnecting
Click Disconnect on the CleverTap page and confirm. Tapper deletes the stored passcode and stops reading. The events Tapper already read stay. Delete the passcode in CleverTap under Settings > Passcode to end the access on CleverTap's side too.
