Two-factor authentication

Turn on two-factor authentication for your Tapper account, sign in with a code from your authenticator app, turn it off, and what to do if you lose your device.

Two-factor authentication adds a second step to signing in to Tapper. After your password or Google sign-in, Tapper asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or 1Password. The code changes every 30 seconds.

It is a setting on your own account, so it applies in every workspace you belong to.

Turn it on

1
Open your profile

Open the account menu at the bottom of the left sidebar and choose Account settings. You can also open Settings and choose Profile. Then open the Login tab.

2
Start the set-up

Next to Two-factor authentication, click Set up 2FA.

3
Add Tapper to your authenticator app

Scan the QR code with the app. If you cannot scan it, click Copy next to the key under the code and add it to the app by hand.

4
Confirm

Under 6-digit code from your authenticator app, type the code the app shows. If your account has a password, enter it under Current password. Click Turn on.

The row then shows On.

If your account has no password, for example because you always sign in with Google, clicking Turn on can open the Verify it's you window first. It emails a 6-digit code to your address. Enter it under Code from the email, then enter a fresh code from your authenticator app and click Turn on again.

Sign in with it

Sign in as usual with your password or Google. Tapper then shows Enter your authentication code. Type the 6-digit code from your app in Authentication code and click Continue.

Single sign-on works the same way. If two-factor authentication is on for your account, Tapper asks for the code after your identity provider signs you in. See Signing in.

Turn it off

1
Open the Login tab

In Settings, open Profile, then the Login tab.

2
Turn it off

Click Turn off 2FA. Enter a code from your authenticator app and click Turn off.

You need your authenticator app to turn it off. If your organization requires two-factor authentication, the row says so and there is no Turn off 2FA button.

If you lose your device

Tapper has no backup or recovery codes. If you can no longer get codes from your app, click Lost your device? Contact support on the code page, or email support@tapper.ai.

Tapper support can reset two-factor authentication on your account. When they do:

  • Every session of your account ends, and Tapper emails your address to say support made the change.
  • You sign in again with your password or Google.
  • When you set up a new authenticator app, Tapper may also ask for a code it emails to you, in the Verify it's you window.

When your organization requires it

There is no workspace setting for this. Tapper can require two-factor authentication for every account on your company's email domains. Contact Tapper support to set it up.

For an account that is covered:

  • Without an authenticator app, the next sign-in opens Set up two-factor authentication. Scan the code, enter the 6-digit code and your current password if you have one, and click Turn on and continue. Nothing else in Tapper opens until it is on.
  • It cannot be turned off.
  • Signing in with Google still asks for the Tapper code.
  • Signing in through your company's single sign-on does not ask anyone to set it up. Your identity provider's own checks apply.
  • API keys are not affected.
